History: Laurentian University Pipe Band

2007 - 2019

The pipe band was originally established in 2007 as the Laurentian Univeristy Pipe Band, by David Young, a third year music student at the univeristy. The group was supported by the Office of the President, and served as musical embassadors for the university, playing for official functions such as convocations, send offs, open houses, and the president’s ball. One year later, the group expanded to include a highland dance team, and provide lessons to students, faculty, alumni, and community members. The pipe band has had the honour of performing for the Right Honourable Jean Chretien, Jack Layton, Michaelle Jean, and Steve Paikin.

History: Lockerby Pipes & Drums

2019 - Present

In 2019, the pipe band found a new home, partnering with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 564, Lockerby. The partnership allows the pipe band to continue to promote it’s Scottish culture, while giving back to the veterans and legionaires who continue to serve our community. The pipe band helped to open the new Eddie Thompson Memorial at the legion, and performed at the 100th anniversary of the War Pensioners of Sudbury. Our band members are active in legion activities throughout the year.

Laurentian University Tartan

Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario launched its tartan in May 2007 when it was first worn by the University's Pipe Band which led the procession of graduates and dignitaries at its 2007 'convocation ceremonies.' The colours are those of the school - blue and gold and the design is based on the Ramsay tartan. Woven by Lochcarron of Scotland.
